About FreeSoftwareX

We help you find genuinely free software, and get it from the people who actually made it.

The problem we exist to solve

Search for almost any popular free program and the results fill up with look-alike download portals. A depressing number of them wrap the real installer inside their own "download manager", which bundles toolbars, browser hijackers, or outright adware. People end up with a compromised machine while believing they installed something legitimate.

Our commitment: what we will not do — no harmful software, no deceptive ads, no invented metrics

How we work

We do not host a single installer. Not one. Every download button on this site opens the software publisher's own official website. You get the authentic, current, digitally signed build directly from its author, with nothing added by us.

That deliberately gives up the traffic that mirror-hosting would earn us. We think a directory you can trust is worth more than one you can't.

What we actually add

The hard part isn't downloading software — it's knowing which program to choose. We label this plainly on every listing, before you download anything.

What it does

A plain-language explanation of the software, not marketing copy.

Who develops it

The publisher behind it, so you know who you're trusting.

What "free" means

Open source, a free tier, or a time-limited trial — labelled plainly.

Platform support

Which operating systems it actually runs on, checked before listing.

How we're funded

FreeSoftwareX is free to use. We're supported by advertising, and some outbound links may earn us a commission if you go on to buy a paid upgrade from a publisher. That never changes which software we list or how we describe it — and it never adds a cost to you. See our terms for the full disclosure.

Found something wrong?

If a link points anywhere other than the publisher's official domain, or a listing is out of date, that's a defect and we want to know.

Every download button actually goes to the real publisher site. First directory I've used where I didn't end up with three extra toolbars installed.

I reported an outdated listing and it was corrected within a couple of days. Nice to see a directory that actually reads its own contact form.

The "what free actually means" label saved me from installing a 14-day trial thinking it was free forever. Small thing, genuinely useful.

Suggested a note-taking app that wasn't listed and it actually got added a week later. Didn't expect that from a random contact form.

No fake download counts, no invented star ratings padding out every listing. Refreshing after years of directories that make up numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Is FreeSoftwareX actually free to use?

Yes, entirely — browsing, searching and downloading through our links costs nothing and never will. We're supported by advertising and some referral commissions, not by charging visitors.

Do you host or repackage any installers yourselves?

No. Every download button links directly to the software publisher's own official site. We don't mirror, wrap or repackage installers — you always get the authentic, current build straight from its author.

How do you decide what gets listed?

Every listing is manually reviewed before it's published — we check that the software is genuinely free (or clearly labelled otherwise), that the link goes to the real publisher, and that the description is accurate.

Can paid placements affect where software ranks organically?

No — organic listings are never for sale. Paid placements are always visibly labelled "Sponsored" or "Featured" and carry distinct styling, so they never get mistaken for an organic recommendation. See what we will and won't do for advertisers.

I found a broken link or outdated listing — what do I do?

Tell us — corrections are the most valuable message we get, and we treat them as priority fixes, usually within a few working days.

Can I suggest software that isn't listed yet?

Yes — send it over with a line about what makes it worth recommending. We curate rather than list everything, but every suggestion is read.

I develop software listed here — can I get my listing updated or removed?

Yes, publisher requests get priority handling. Contact us with the listing in question and what needs to change, and we'll action it promptly.
