7-Zip: what it's good at

7-Zip packs and unpacks essentially every archive format, offers its own high-ratio 7z format, and supports AES-256 encrypted archives. Unlike WinRAR it is genuinely free with no trial expiry or nag screens.

WinZip: what it's good at

WinZip is the original commercial archiver for Windows and macOS. It opens and creates ZIP and several other archive formats, adds cloud-storage integration and file-management extras, and is sold under a paid licence once the trial period ends.

Which should you choose?

7-Zip costs nothing, so you can try it first and lose only the time. WinZip has to earn the licence fee against that — if it does the job better for how you work, it is worth paying for; if it does not, you have your answer.

Both run on Windows. Only 7-Zip supports Linux. Only WinZip supports macOS, Android, iOS. If open source matters to you, 7-Zip publishes its source code and WinZip does not.

We deliberately do not publish a star rating for either. We have no way to verify a rating that would be honest at scale, and an invented one would be worse than none — so we give you the facts and let you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7-Zip better than WinZip?

Neither is universally better. 7-Zip the best free archive manager — high compression, no nag screens, while WinZip the long-standing commercial Windows archiver, sold on a licence. The right pick depends on your platform and workflow.

Are both really free?

7-Zip is open source and WinZip is free trial. 7-Zip can be downloaded and used without paying. WinZip is paid software — the trial runs for a limited period, after which it needs a licence.

Can I install both?

Yes. Installing 7-Zip alongside the WinZip trial and running both over your own files is the fastest way to find out whether the paid one is worth it to you.
